Customer review: Wicker Park Fitness in Chicago
West of downtown Chicago you can find a gym supplying many of the typical downtown gym amenities without the hefty membership fee. As the name says, Wicker Park fitness is located just a few blocks west of Ashland on Division St. in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Not only does Wicker Park Fitness offer such services as Kick Boxing, Yoga, Pilates, body sculpting and all the other classes one would expect at a larger gym, but Wicker Park fitness also provides a sense of community that comes along with whatever class you are taking. The trainers there are some of the best I've seen in that they really care about the progress of their students; some trainers have been known to go as far as to tutor their own students in order to help them become trainers themselves—at no charge I might add! This is not to say that service such as that is available all the time, however, the fact that it has happened really speaks to the dedication that the employees of Wicker Park Fitness have to their guests.
As for the equipment: state of the art and clean. This is a great change of pace from some of the other gyms you can find in the area. I've tried a few before settling on Wicker Park Fitness and I can say that I've never had an issue with a machine never being wiped down and cleans in every nook and cranny. On top of that, unlike many of the low priced gyms also in the area, the equipment is never broken. I can't tell you how many times I have walked into a gym and a few of the machines I need are "waiting on parts." This is not to say the machines don't break, of course they do once in a while no matter how new they are, but the speed with which they are repaired really speaks to the quality of their machines in that a repairman can be expedited to resolve the issue by days end.
On top of all that, the price is extremely competitive. The honest truth about gym memberships is that many people aren't going to use them. Wicker Park Fitness takes advantage of this and utilizes it as a means to keep wait times down. The rates are always changing so it is often difficult to grab a deal that they ran a few months before to get more guests in. Sometimes the price is pretty high, but I think that is simply to dissuade people from signing up because machine wait times were on the rise. Like anything else the gym membership fees move in cycles, and when they noticed that guests were giving up on new years resolutions the price dropped again. So don't be put off if you can't get a years membership for the coveted 499 a year, sit tight, use some guest passes until the price returns to meet demand.
